What is a Smog Rating?

Smog rating stickerSmog Ratings are a great tool for finding out how clean your vehicle is, or for comparison shopping when the time comes to buy your next car. A Smog Rating reflects a vehicles tailpipe emissions on a scale from 1 to 10, with 10 being the cleanest. Nearly 50% of the urban air pollution along the Wasatch Front comes from cars and trucks, so for those looking for ways to clean up our air, Smog Ratings represent an important tool for making cleaner transportation choices.

Vehicle Smog Ratings are administered by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which requires auto makers to manufacture vehicles that meet certain emissions standards. The all-electric 2018 Nissan Leaf offered through the Live Electric program has a Smog Rating of 10, and the plug-in hybrid electric Ford C-Max and Fusion have a Smog Rating of 8. However, it's important to note that the plug-in hybrid electric options can have either more or less tailpipe emission depending on how often the hybrid gasoline engine is used. Read more about Smog Ratings on the EPA's website here.

ucair logo fullcolor 1The Utah Clean Air Partnership, or UCAIR, designed an app to check smog ratings for various cars from 2004 to the present. When you're buying your next car, a smog rating can give you a quick estimate as to how dirty the car's emissions are from an air quality standpoint. This is especially important during Utah's winter and summer inversion periods - vehicles with a high score will mitigate high pollution directly. You can find their tool here.
