In 2015, the U Drive Electric pilot program helped 76 community members make the switch to electric vehicles in just six weeks. Round two of U Drive Electric offered more vehicles and dealers, and teamed up with Salt Lake City to offer a great opportunity to an even larger community. Anyone who lived or worked in Salt Lake City was eligible to participate in the second round of U Drive Electric. In addition, members of the U Campus Community, including faculty, staff, students, alumni, and campus guests were also eligible to participate. Through both rounds of U Drive Electric over 200 new EVs were purchased. Additionally, Weber State University and Utah State University teamed up with Utah Clean Energy to offer the Drive Electric Northern Utah program in late 2016. This program offered the same great benefits to even more communities in Utah. Encompasing Weber, Cache, Davis, Box Elder and Morgan counties.
Why drive an electric vehicle? Maybe you want to save money on fuel and maintenance costs, enjoy the high torque acceleration of an electric engine, or access up to $9,000 in state and federal tax credits. In addition to these great reasons, driving an electric vehicle has huge benefits for air quality. When compared to traditional gasoline vehicles, electric vehicles drastically reduce the amount of criteria air pollutants associated with your driving. Criteria air pollutants are responsible for the poor air quality on winter and summer inversion days. Approximately 48% of the criteria air pollutants along the Wasatch Front come from mobile sources (cars and trucks). This means you can take proactive steps towards cleaning up our air by replacing your gasoline vehicle with an EV.
